From 27 to 28th February 2014, was held in Turin by ATA-Associazione Tecnica dell’Automobile, the 4th International Conference about ‘Advanced materials and technologies for transport-Lightweight materials: sustainable solutions for the next vehicles generation’,
ATA’s aim was to create an event where car-makers needs, research developers and materials/technology suppliers offers could meet.
Solutions about automotive sustainability were sought discussing about the adoption of new lightweight materials in large scale by automotive firms. The main issue today is the analysis of the trade-off between the extra-cost of lightweight design and the possible gains from lower life-time costs for energy consumption and emissions.
SquadraCorse took part at the conference and showed best solutions, adopted by the team, in term of lightweight materials. One of these was the carbonfiber monocoque, composed by different layers of carbon fiber and aluminium with honeycomb structure. This kind of adoption ensured us a 50% reduction in weight in comparison to the traditional tubular steel space-frame.
